THE JAMES BOND ISLAND ADVENTURE

Take a short boat ride from Egersund and step onto one of the wildest and most fascinating islands on the Norwegian coast. Skarvøy – known locally as “The James Bond Island” – is a place of dramatic geology, hidden caves, wartime history, and unforgettable ocean views.

Wide angle view of a rocky coastline with lush greenery

Just 15 minutes by boat from Egersund, Skarvøy lies exposed in the open sea, surrounded by raw Atlantic nature. This is not a typical island walk – it is a true adventure. The terrain is rugged and uneven, and in some places you will need to scramble over rocks and navigate wild coastal ground. But for those willing to explore, Skarvøy offers one of the most unique outdoor experiences in south-west Norway.

The island is a paradise for discovery and play. On the eastern side, huge boulders have formed spectacular caves and natural chambers, including the largest one – a dramatic 10-metre-high cave known locally as “The Oven.” Skarvøy is also home to Norway’s largest concentration of giant’s kettles – remarkable circular potholes carved into the rock by ancient glacial forces. One of them is so large that it is even possible to enter it by boat.

But Skarvøy is more than geology and wild beauty – it also holds a remarkable wartime story. During the Second World War, Norwegian resistance fighters hid in the island’s caves while waiting to be picked up by a British motor torpedo boat. In 1944, one of the officers involved in the rescue was Guy Hamilton, who later became the director of four James Bond films, including Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, and The Man with the Golden Gun. That extraordinary connection is why Skarvøy is often called The James Bond Island.

The island’s smooth, rounded rock formations are made of anorthosite, a coarse-grained igneous rock around 900 million years old. In the most exposed parts of the island, especially on the south-west side, the rock takes on a striking reddish colour, adding yet another layer of character to this already unforgettable place.

This guided experience lasts approximately 3 hours and combines a scenic boat trip, island exploration, storytelling, and authentic local insight. It is ideal for adventurous guests who want to experience something truly different – far beyond the usual tourist routes.
